Conductor - Alwyn Green

Our conductor is Alwyn Green. He is well-known  in both the orchestral and the brass band worlds.

Alwyn graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama specialising in the trombone and euphonium, and has since been awarded external diplomas from the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music.

During his career he has played with most of the major British orchestras. In 1970 he was appointed Bass Trombonist of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra., and has been the Bass Trombonist with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) since 1986.

He was a founder member of the Prince of Wales Brass and the Palm Court Theatre Orchestra, and in 1999 he formed the Berkley Salon Ensemble with colleagues from the CBSO.

As a composer and arranger he has had a number of works published, and many have been broadcast or recorded. He has arranged music for film, including Eric Morecambe’s last film “The Passionate Pilgrim” starring Tom Baker and Madeline Smith. His arrangements are frequently used by the CBSO.

Alwyn teaches Bass Trombone, and Brass Band Scoring & Arranging at the Birmingham Conservatoire and Birmingham University. He also plays a major role in the CBSO education programme.

He has been Musical Director of a number of brass bands and has made guest appearances with many more. He has also collaborated with other composers such as Eric Ball and Ken Downie.


Leader - Laura Brownsell

The orchestra's leader is Laura Brownsell. She is a West Midlander with a striking list of achievements.

She is a graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire where she studied under Nic Fallowfield of the Tedesca Quartet. During her time there she led the Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Orchestra and had masterclasses with prestigious violinists such as Charles Sewart, Pieter Schoeman, Oliver Wille, Jennifer Koh, and Berent Korfker.

She led the Wolverhampton Youth Orchestra, and with them toured Italy, Slovenia, Spain, and Malta. She was also a member of the CBSO Youth Orchestra.

Laura now teaches violin and piano. and is studying for a PGDipEd in Primary Education at the University of Birmingham. She also leads cross-curricular music workshops in primary schools across the West Midlands.
