Conductor’s Notes – 21st November

Hi all, I hope you’ve had a great week, and I’m looking forward to cracking on with our new repertoire over the next few weeks before we break for Christmas.

What we did on Monday 21st November

We carried on from Monday 14th and looked at Borodin’s Symphony No. 2, doing some really good work on Movements 1, 2, & 4. It was great to do such good ensemble work on these, and to have some fun playing through music we don’t normally get to do. Thank you for your hard work in these rehearsals, and I hope you all got something from it – I certainly did!

What we’ll do on Monday 28th November

Now we’ll begin the work on our Spring concert, this week looking at Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. Having played the Allegretto in the last concert, we’ll be looking at the other movements to begin with.
* Trombones, I’m very sorry that I’ve not yet had time to do your parts for the Beethoven, so I hope you don’t mind taking this week off. *

In December we’ll have the rest of the music for the concert, so will look at that then.

This Week’s Listening

I’m going to keep sharing pieces that interest and inspire me, or are just brilliant pieces of music that I think you should all hear. This week’s is the latter, and I’m sure some of you will know it already; Fauré’s incredible Requiem. I’m performing this this weekend with one of my choirs, and I absolutely adore the piece. If you have time, do give it a listen all the way through. If not, enjoy the opening movement Introit et Kyrie HERE.

Have a great weekend, and see you on Monday.
Ben

Conductor’s Notes – 14th November

Firstly, a HUGE well done for last Saturday’s concert! I thought you all played incredibly well, and should be so pleased with how the entire performance went. The audience loved it, and I’ve had some brilliant feedback from the evening. I’m so proud of what we achieved – it was a fiendish programme, and certainly a challenge for us all, but you all rose to that challenge and shone brilliantly. Let’s continue to revel in the success, and look forward to the next one in March.

What we did on Monday 14th November:

We took it easy and looked at something completely different – Borodin’s Symphony No. 2. After playing it all the way through in the first half, we played did some great work on movements 3 & 4.

What we’ll do on Monday 21st November:

We’ll have a look at movements 1 & 2 of the Borodin, focusing especially on ensemble.

I understand that some of you would like to crack straight on with the music for next term, but I also know that some people would like to play through new music, even if we don’t perform it.
Can I reassure you that we’ll do the Borodin for just this week, and from the 28th we’ll start looking towards March’s concert. This gives us more time to get the final bits of music in, and hand out the new music. I also think these two weeks of ‘just playing it through’ are a great opportunity to look at music we won’t necessarily play in concert due to its difficulty in a non-pressured environment, to enjoy a different piece and style of music, and to work on good orchestral practices such as ensemble, listening, and collective musicianship.
I personally love the Borodin, and hope you’ll enjoy this final week of working on it, despite the copies being quite unclear, haha!

Looking Forward

… to our March concert: The Joy of Spring. Please find below a running order of what we’ll be doing, when the concert is, and a playlist to start listening to.
I’m really excited about this concert, and look forward to starting work on it on the 28th November.

Conductor’s Notes – 7th November

Less than a week to go… my goodness it was sounding great last night! Not only a really high-quality sound, but a truly exciting performance. Final push towards what will be a night to remember!

What we did on Monday 7th November:

A general run of the programme, though I knew we wouldn’t get through everything due to the amount of music there is. A good rehearsal with lots of playing, but efficient and accurate rehearsing.

We started off with Colonel Bogey to warm up – a reminder of NO REPEATS IN THE DA CAPO (2nd time around) and going to the FINE. After this we played through James Bond Medley, doing spots of work at the start of each section. Then we played through Pirates of Penzance Overture, which went very well, and we just needed to spot-check this, especially thinking about balance and accuracy of rhythms. To end the first half we ran the Allegretto, again just doing minor work on the sections, and encouraging sections to bring out certain sections. Strings at Letters E & F – don’t rush!

In the second half we played through Movements I, II, III, and V of Star Wars Suite, focusing especially on the tight rhythms – Trombones and Percussion at 98… I won’t break eye contact with you there… we won’t rush ahead. Loads of good work, so we just need to ensure tempo changes are solid on Saturday. We ended by playing through half of Pirates of the Caribbean which, naturally, was great; just watch those opening rhythms, Flutes.

What we’ll do on Saturday 12th November:

Concert Day!
*A reminder that the rehearsal is at St Michael’s Church, TF7 5BN *
In the afternoon rehearsal, we’ll begin with West Side Story and Pirates of the Caribbean, covering the bits we missed on Monday. We’ll then just clarify Star Wars movements V & I, before looking at movement IV. Then it’ll be spot checking the other pieces from the first half. I promise to take the whole rehearsal easy, so everyone can feel rested and relaxed about the concert in the evening – brass and wind save your lips, strings save your arms! We won’t do anything too loudly or intensly.

Timings:

Rehearsal
13:00 – Set up at St Michael’s Church.
13:15 – Latest time to arrive to set up the church.
13:30 – Rehearsal starts.
*plenty of breaks in the rehearsal.
16:30 – Rehearsal ends and we pack down the church and set up the Anstice.
It’ll be all hands on deck to help clear up the church and to set up at the Anstice. Staging needs to go up, percussion needs moving to the stage, and chairs need to be placed. If we could have as many people helping as possible we can make light work of it all!

Concert
19:10 – Back in the Anstice to warm up and prepare.
19:25 – Head on stage (keep tootling so the room doesn’t fall silent)
19:28 – Tuning.
19:30 – Concert begins.

Post Concert
21:20 – Approximate end time for concert.
21:30 – All music back in folders and handed in. Percussion to be helped moved down, and staging taken apart. Please do help pack down at the end too… we don’t want 3 or 4 people doing everything…

Running order for the concert:
James Bond Medley – Misc.
Pirates of Penzance – Sullivan
Allegretto – Beethoven
Colonel Bogey – Alford
– Interval of around 30 minutes – Bar open and raffle will run
Star Wars Suite – Williams
West Side Story – Bernstein
Pirates of the Caribbean – Badelt

Concert Dress:

All black with a poppy (red, white, purple). Please make sure to wear black socks and black shoes… it’ll be really obvious if you don’t wear all black…

Monday 14th November:

We will be having a rehearsal, but it’ll be a gentle play-through of something different and exciting. I’m thinking either Brahms 1 or Borodin 2… do come along for a fun play!

I think that’s everything. Thank you so much for all of your hard work this term, it’s been such an exciting journey, and the orchestra sounds truly transformed. I’m really looking forward to Saturday, so see you all around 13:00 at St Michael’s.
Ben

Conductor’s Notes – 31st October

It’s November already! With less than two weeks to the concert, we’re in really good shape, but just a few things to practice at home now. Thank you all so much for your incredible work on this programme – at the start it seemed impossible, but it’s safe to say this is going to be an incredible concert!

What we did on Monday 31st October:

We started off by running Star Wars: I. Main Title – it’s really interesting that once we’ve played the first 20 bars once or twice it then takes on a new life. We just need to ensure the first (and only) time we play it in the concert is like we’ve already played it a couple of times. We worked backwards making sure we were all clear with what happens with the cut-off and pause at the end, and then did some really good detailed stuff on the previous sections.

I think we can all agree that sectionals are really useful for covering the fine details, both at the early and late rehearsal stages – Monday was no different. Strings with me, well done on all of the fiddly playing we managed. It’s now just a case of finding 20 minutes every-other-day to go through those crazy sections and lock in what we did. Great work on character, such as the shimmery figure at 19 in II. Princess Leia’s Theme, and the harsh bite of III. The Imperial March. Then some excellent but brief work on Beethoven’s Allegretto.

Wind, from what I heard and what Chris told me, brilliant work on West Side Story. I hope it’s firmed up all of those tricky rhythms and lovely Bernstein-ian harmonic crunches! Looking forward to hearing that next week. Great work on I. Main Title too, that sounded a lot neater.

We ended with going through Pirates of Penzance which, given we haven’t played it since July, was excellent. It’s just a case of being aware of the finer details to ensure the style and character is always there. Maybe just look over it to remind yourselves in the next week.

What we’ll do on Monday 7th November:

We’ll essentially do a run of the concert. Little things will be glossed over to ensure we have enough time, but please do come prepared with everything as perfect as it can possibly be. We’ll also be focussing on the tempo changes to firm up confidence with the huge number of changing sections.

Running order for the concert:
James Bond Medley – Misc.
Pirates of Penzance – Sullivan
Allegretto – Beethoven
Colonel Bogey – Alford
– Interval of around 30 minutes – Bar open and raffle will be run
Star Wars Suite – Williams
West Side Story – Bernstein
Pirates of the Caribbean – Badelt

More details about the concert will be posted next week, but please note that the pre-concert rehearsal will be at St Michael’s Church at 13:30, with set up from 13:00. We’ll then migrate over to The Anstice at 16:30 and set up there.
I fully appreciate that this is a big programme, so the the pre-concert rehearsal will be very relaxed, and will just confirm tempos, timings, and fiddly bits. Please save yourselves for the concert, but do make the most of this pre-concert rehearsal, even if you just sit there and go through the music!

Conductor’s Notes – 24th October

What a fantastic couple of rehearsals we’ve had over the past week. Apologies for the delay in getting this out, I was enjoying a bit of time off to do some much-needed wedding planning!
A good deal to go through today, so thanks for reading.

What we did on Saturday 22nd October:

Firstly, a huge thank you to Adrian and Julie for their incredible hospitality and welcoming us to their home to rehearse. I hope you all agree that it was not only a productive rehearsal but a really lovely afternoon. I’m sure you’ll also all agree that I’m sacked and Julie is hired in my place, haha!

We began by working through Colonel Bogey thinking about style, character, and the subtleties that will make the work worth performing. I made a mistake in where we finish, so please note we will do AS PRINTED on the parts; after the D.C. al Fine we go back to the beginning, play through and finish at the “Fine” before the Trio, as printed.
An excellent play through and work on the Beethoven – clearly the hard work you did with Chris payed off. We’ll touch this up on Monday 7th Nov.

Great work on all of the Star Wars movements. I needn’t remind you to just keep practicing the parts you’re unfamiliar with, as I will be doing over the next couple of weeks too!
We finished with some great playing in West Side Story – it’s really coming together now, with just a bit more work to be done on the joins between sections. The ‘Something’s Coming’ section felt a lot more secure with the double basses joining us (brilliant to have you basses!), just still be careful not to drag, off-beat strings.

What we did on Monday 24th October:

It was lovely to welcome the percussion on Monday, and we had a good start to the rehearsal working on Pirates of the Caribbean, perfecting the different changes between sections.
We then did lots of detailed work on James Bond – something we haven’t done since July. Each section individually went well, but we didn’t quite have time to work on the opening; something for next week.

After the break we corroborated what we did on Saturday in West Side Story and did some really good work on the joins between sections. Again, having the percussion made all the difference, and it’s so important we all lock in together with tempi and ‘grooves’.
We ended with The Imperial March – a good “brass-fest”… just make sure it doesn’t have any ‘swing’ which makes it sound camp! Little bits to be done on this next week.

What we’ll do on Monday 31st October:

A last-minute sectionals this week to touch up anything that needs immediate work.
19:30 – Tutti in the Main Hall on I. Main Title.
19:50 – Continued work on Star Wars and West Side Story: Strings in main hall with Ben, Wind and Brass downstairs in the Library with Chris.
20:25 – Break.
20:35 – Strings work on Allegretto. Wind work on West Side Story.
20:50 – ‘Call for concerns’: open sectionals on any problems members are having with any work.
21:10 – Pirates of Penzance. A quick reminder of this, as we’ve not done it since July.

Tomorrow (at the time of writing) is exactly 2 weeks away from the concert… let’s put in the extra hours of practice between now and then together for this!

Conductor’s Notes – 17th October

Hello everyone! A HUGE thank you to Chris for stepping in at such short notice. I was gutted to miss the rehearsal, and missed you all a lot, but I heard that some good work was done.
I’m looking forward to seeing most of you at Adrian’s on Saturday.

What we did on Monday 17th October:

You began with working on Beethoven’s Allegretto, rehearsing the whole movement in sections, with the whole movement sounding great. Chris told me he worried about the strings rushing the bowings on the opening rhythms, so that’s one to just watch out for.
Afterwards you did some excellent work on West Side Story, with Chris saying the beginning sounded brilliant, but we got slightly stuck at ‘Something’s Coming’ at letter L. We’ll do some work on this on Saturday, but overall I’m really pleased.
Some lovely feedback from both Chris and members, so thank you all for coping with it when I’m not available, especially at such short notice.

What we’ll do on Saturday 22nd October:

On Saturday we’ll be working efficiently and effectively through lots of music, but taking regular breaks. Below is a full rehearsal schedule. Please note that, following the great work on the Beethoven you did on Monday, all we’ll really do on it is play it through.

13:45 – Arrive.
14:00 – Tuning and warm up with Colonel Bogey.
14:20 – Beethoven Allegretto.
14:35 – Star Wars Movement II. Princess Leia’s Theme.
15:15 – Break.
15:30 – Star Wars Movement I. Main Title.
16:00 – Star Wars Movement IV. Yoda’s Theme (Trumpets not needed).
16:15 – Break.
16:30 – Star Wars Movement V. Throne Room and End Title.
16:50 – West Side Story.
17:20 – Pirates of the Caribbean.
17:30 – Finish and social (at Adrian’s discretion).

Detailed plan, and I’m sure it’ll change, but it gives us something to work towards!

On Monday 24th we’ll be going through any section not ‘up to scratch’ at the Saturday rehearsal, so I’m sure that’ll all be clear by 5:30pm on Saturday afternoon…

It’s worth saying that this Saturday rehearsal is exactly 3 weeks away from the concert. I’m sure that, in rehearsals, you’re aware of exactly where needs the work, and I can say for certain I’ll be putting in the extra hours of practice between now and then – please do join me in this…

Conductor’s Notes – 10th October

I’m so excited to carry on working with you all on this programme. It’s sounding SO good, and we just seem to go from strength to strength each week. A little bit of a different one this week.

What we did on Monday 3rd October:

We started with some more excellently detailed work on Movement V. Throne Room & End Title joining up each section, with plenty of focus on the tempo and character changes the central section brings.
After the break we did some of the same but on West Side Story, getting to grips with all of the difficult tempo and style changes in that too.

What we’ll do on Monday 17th October:

This week, we’ll begin with Beethoven’s Allegretto, then we’ll do a smidgen on Movement II. Princess Leia’s Theme, before the Wind and Brass go home early and we’ll do a bit of string sectional work on Movement I. Main Title.

Extra Rehearsal

A reminder about our extra rehearsal on Saturday 22nd October at Adrian’s. The rehearsal will run from 14:00-17:30 with plenty of breaks. Most people have confirmed their availability, but if you haven’t, could you please confirm your availability for this.

This week’s listening

With it being Ralph Vaughan Williams’s 150th birthday last Wednesday, I thought I’d share with you something a little different to our normal repertoire – Silent Noon from his song cycle The House of Life. This movement is unbelievably beautiful and tender, softly sung by solo baritone and accompanied by gently rocking chords in the piano accompaniment. It’s only 4 minutes long, so well worth a LISTEN HERE.

See you all on Monday 17th
Ben

Conductor’s Notes – 3rd October

I hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend. We’ve been doing some excellent work over the past couple of weeks, and I’m so pleased with how it’s sounding.

What we did on Monday 3rd October:

We began this week with a run-through of Pirates of the Caribbean, before doing some work on it, beginning with the end. A reminder that we need loads of vibrato and ‘slush’ from bar 167, and then we did some good work on keeping the rhythm steady from bar 181. We made sure pulse and drive at bar 75 was solid, and then the atmosphere was really exciting from bar 96.

Then we played Movement V. Throne Room & End Title. There was some discussion on the suggested cuts we all have marked in, but we decided to play it all. Good work on those hard accompaniment rhythms from bar 10 – it’s well worth putting in the time to secure these rhythms as they sound so impressive when they’re tight.

We ended with a bit of Beethoven’s Allegretto, including some detailed work from letter D – the ‘B’ section of the movement.

What we’ll do on Monday 10th October:

We’ll begin with a bit more work on Movement V. Throne Room & End Title from Star Wars, and then we’ll do some West Side Story, before finishing with the Allegretto from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony again.

Conductor’s Notes – 26th September

October is looming, I can’t believe it! Some important stuff in this post, so please make sure you read all the way through. Thanks all!

What we did on Monday 26th September:

We started off by recapping Movement I. Main Title of the Star Wars Suite, which went very well. It was lovely to have so many people there, which meant we could get a lot of really good work done. Just be careful of all of those tricky rhythms – it’s really worth listening through to the recordings with your parts to help ingrain them all.

Then we played Movement II. Princess Leia’s Theme with some really beautiful solos. String, make sure we’re thinking about accompanying the solos, so listening and communicating well with them. Excellent work on all of the layering of the different musical textures.

After the break we played Movement III. The Imperial March – no thunder and lightening this week! Just some really good, accurate playing thinking about the different characters and timbres each part adds to the music. Again, a little refresher of that final rhythm would be very helpful in practice.

Finally, we ended with Pirates of the Caribbean, and focussed on nailing the opening section. Good work with finding the cheeky, playful style, and well done on those nasty cross-rhythms flutes. We finished with playing it through to bar 167.

What we’ll do on Monday 3rd October:

We’ll begin with working on the rest of Pirates of the Caribbean, a little bit of Movement V. Throne Room & End Title from Star Wars, and after the break we’ll do some West Side Story, before finishing with the Allegretto from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.

Extra Rehearsal

Phil will be sending this round in an email to all members.
Due to losing a week of rehearsal to the bank holiday, we’ve decided to schedule a Saturday rehearsal. This will be on Saturday 22nd October and Adrian has very kindly agreed to host this at his house – his address will be in the email to members. The rehearsal will run from 14:00-17:30 with plenty of breaks. We understand that it’s fairly short notice so if you can’t make it we understand. But, with a lot of music still to rehearse, we’d love as many people there as possible. Could you please confirm your availability for this.

Playlist

I always find listening to the music incredibly helpful to learning it, even if tiny things are different. So, please do make use of the Spotify Playlist HERE. It contains everything except the James Bond Medley which you can hear if you click HERE.

Your Thoughts

As I forgot to do this last week, I’m going to provide some paper and pens so you can all write down any suggestions for repertoire in the future – I love hearing about what you’d like to do, and will always take into account suggestions for programmes. Of course, if you can’t make it, please feel free to email me or chat to me at any point; I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I hope you can all agree that, despite the music being incredibly fiendish, it sounded truly epic on Monday. I’m so grateful for all of your commitment to the orchestra as we work towards a very exciting concert!
See you all on the 3rd October.

-Ben

Conductor’s Notes – 19th September

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all well. Just some quick notes about this week’s rehearsal, and what to look forward to next term.

What we‘ve already done this term:

It’s been great to start our “Stage and Screen” concert repertoire for our November concert. We’ve managed to look through all the music, so now it’s a case of practice, practice, practice!
Two weeks ago, on the 12th Sep, we spent lots of time rehearsing the 4th and 1st movements of the Star Wars Suite, particularly focussing on the hard rhythms and intricate textures. We ended with small sections on the West Side Story Medley, which is coming along nicely.

What we’ll do on Monday 26th:

Lots more work on Star Wars Suite, as you might expect. This week, a brief reminder of the 1st movement, then movement 3, and movement 2. We’ll then work on the Pirates of the Caribbean Medley.

AGM follow up

It was lovely to see many of you online at the AGM last Wednesday. I loved chatting through everything we’ve accomplished over the past year, and it was excellent to chat about future repertoire. Below is information about the Spring term.

I’m also going to provide some paper and pens tonight, so you can all write down any suggestions for repertoire in the future – I love hearing about what you’d like to do, and will always take into account suggestions for programmes. Of course, if you can’t make it tonight, please feel free to email me or chat to me at any point, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Programme for Spring ’23

And, as promised, the programme for Spring ’23. I’m really excited to be working on and performing this music with you all – it’s fabulous and I hope you’ll all enjoy it. I also hope you’ll appreciate the continuation of Beethoven’s 7 Symphony into the term, getting to play the whole thing after working on the 2nd movement for our “Stage and Screen” concert.

“The Joy of Spring”

Karelia Suite – Sibelius, J.

Excerpts from The Wand of Youth Suites 1 & 2 – Elgar, E.
Suite 1: I. Overture
Suite 1: II. Serenade
Suite 2: I. March
Suite 2: III. Moths and Butterflies
Suite 2: V. The Tame Bear
Suite 2: VI. The Wild Bear

Symphony No. 7 – Beethoven, L. v.

See you all tonight!
